Teaching Advanced HTML & CSS
Way back in 2009 I was fortunate to teach a group of really talented students what I knew about HTML & CSS. I ended up learning more than I taught.
But that's no surprise coming from a group of students trained at the Academy of Art. The quality of work coming out of that college was impressive. The students were hyper-focused on building an HTML portfolio project, but my main goal was to get the fundamentals engrained in their understanding. Along the way we learned about specificity, descendent selectors, the quirks of pages, validation, and how to get a WordPress site up and running. We walked through the basics using this highly recommended book with Andy Budd, CSS Mastery. After reading so many books on CSS at a time when half the spec didn't work in half the browsers out there, this was a breath of fresh air, and nailed the concepts perfectly. If you want to learn CSS, this is the book. You might find a newer version but make sure it's the one with Andy Budd.
Overall, I found I learned more about the subject from my students asking great questions, and it was enjoyable to walk through problem-solving with them.
I'm proud to say a number of my students went on to be senior designers and web developers. I hope some of my influence provided a good foundation!
